1. What got you interested in fashion merchandising?

I graduated from a Fashion Design course in Lasalle College International last year. I was already selling a few of my designs and have also dressed a few celebrities/personalities while I was still in school. Late October last year, my good friend, Angela Alarcon and I thought of starting a ready-to-wear clothing line for guys and girls. We produced some samples but never followed through with full production. We regrouped and decided to put up a store that will house both up-and-coming local designers and indie foreign labels. That was how Almost Famous was born.

2. What is Almost Famous?

Almost Famous came from an impulsive decision to explore the unknown, what has evolved is a reflection of two diverse personalities unified by their love for fashion. It is a mix of eccentricity and style, playfulness and culture, irony, and elegance. The store offers a selection of recognizable and up-and-coming labels for both men and women which include Czarina Villa, Charina Sarte, BC Manila, Louis Claparols, SassaJ, and Sloane locally, and Thai labels such as Senada, Disaya, Jiragunyah, and Dapper, amongst others. We want to provide a wonderfully diverse shopping experience to different types of people and only give the best of merchandise that we love. Almost Famous also serves as a meeting place for our designers and their personal clients, as well as a venue for them to hold their private sales, product launches, and other related events. Our central location makes it very accessible for people to come to the store. In the next year, there is likely to be a considerable increase in the number of bars, restaurants, and retail shops in the area so it is a natural transition that it develops into the new lifestyle mecca.

3. What made you decide to put up Almost Famous?

It has always been my dream to open my own store. I didn't think it would materialize so soon, but everything has been great so far. I always thought that I would start off by launching my own clothing line before putting up a store, but my plans turn out to be unfolding in reverse and I'm not complaining. Hopefully, by January, my clothing line will be available in the store already.

4. Where do you get the items sold in Almost Famous?

Our merchandise is composed mostly of local designers, though our future plans definitely include stocking up on more foreign labels. We are looking for pieces that have some sort of "wow" factor-those that just speak for themselves and are totally fresh, unique, and eye-catching! If we don't love something, we don't bring it in. Prior to opening the store (and up until now), we went through a long list of referrals, magazines, look books, and portfolios and we believe that we made great choices. All of our designer merchandise are sold exclusively in the store. We have exclusive styles and/or colors that are only available in Almost Famous.


5. Do you have plans of making your own clothing line? If so, what will be your inspiration?

Yes, of course. I am actually working on my design concept already, hoping to have it ready by January. It will be a ready-to-wear line produced in limited pieces. Not too much detail for now. Just wait and see. :)

6. What tips do you have for Candy Girls who would like to start a career in fashion merchandising?

Live with a burning passion for what you love to do. The general rule of being nice to everyone you meet is something to keep in mind. Think fast and think ahead in terms of trends and what people want. And as cliché as it may sound, the customer is always right! :)
