Ever tried getting fit as a New Year's resolution but you ~never~ really make it happen? No amount of "inspiring" people on Instagram or motivational quotes could get you to actually work out, and hey, that's okay.

Because research says the best motivation for us to stay healthy and fit is actually the resident gym enthusiast in our barkada. study conducted by Luanna Alexandra Cheng, Gerfeson Mendonça, and José Cazuza de Farias Júnior found that as adoloscents grow older, the amount of physical activity the friends they surround themselves with has influences on their own physical activity.

"Adolescents tend to rely more on their friends as age increases, since during adolescence, friends naturally become the closest people with whom they share attitudes, standards, values, and preferences that ultimately influence several behaviors, including physical activity," the study says.

Aside from this, the study associates this relationship to one's need to belong in a group. Individuals who want to feel like they belong or are accepted in a certain friend group will tend to adopt the same behavior as the people in that friend group.

So if you have friends who are frequently into working out, chances are, this will motivate you to start working out as well. If your set of friends isn't the type to exercise, you'll most likely be less motivated to work out yourself.

Ultimately, though, your #fitspo should be your need to stay healthy, so instead of waiting for your barkada to inspire you to work out, why not be the one to inspire them to get active?
