For some educators, being a teacher goes beyond the four walls of a classroom.

Nick Valera Alconis from Sta. Rosa Elementary School in Abra is the prime example of a teacher who would do anything for their students.

Teacher Nick was born with polio disease that affected one of his arms. After college, he started volunteering in their local government unit (LGU) as a kindergarten teacher, as well as an Alternative Learning System (ALS) teacher. But when his contract as a part-time teacher ended, Nick turned to carpentry to earn a living.

He was eventually able to go back to his passion when he got a job at Sta. Rosa Elementary School. Teacher Nick went from holding plywoods and hammers to books and chalk—again.

During the quarantine, Teacher Nick, along with his co-teachers, came up with the idea to create a learning corner for their students. With the help of his experience in carpentry, Nick took on the task of providing tables for the setup. Thanks to his skills and some donations, he was able to provide 30 tables for his students and he is looking forward to building more for them.
