The women of Sto. Niño, South Cotabato took it upon themselves to address two problems: the low income of their community of farmers (caused not just by the lockdown but by the Rice Tariffication Law, which has lowered the price of locally produced rice), and the environmentally harmful practice of burning dayami (aka rice straws).
The result? A thriving eco bag business that has come a long way in helping their farmers AND providing an alternative to the dreaded single-use plastic bag.
With the help of non-profit and farmer-led org Masipag Mindanao, the women of People’s Action for a Liberative Agricultural Industry (PALAI) were able to pursue this passion project for the benefit of the community.
