It's no secret that schools take pride in producing board topnotchers. Colleges and universities would often find ways to openly recognize their student achievers, from congratulating them publicly on social media to displaying their photos on campus.
Recently, the University of Cebu even gifted a *brand new car* to Mark Johnuel M. Duavis, one of their Physician Licensure Examination topnotchers last October. Wow!
With an impressive 87.08% average, Mark managed to place tenth out of the 3,826 new doctors who passed the exam. Beyond topping the board, he also graduated cum laude last year!
As thanks for all his hard work, his alma mater gave him a white Toyota Wigo with an approximated value of half a million pesos. The university's official School of Medicine Facebook page posted a photo of the car last week with the caption, "The tradition continues. This Toyota Wigo Car, a gift from our Chairman, Atty. Augusto Go is waiting for our OCTOBER 2022 Physician Licensure Examination board pleasure Dr. Mark Johnuel Duavis. Congratulations."
In addition to a car, Mark Johnuel will also receive a cash incentive and recognition plaque from Buenavista Mayor Dave Duallo, as stipulated in a 2014 municipal ordinance. "Mark is making history as the first topnotcher in physician licensure examination in Buenavista. He is an inspiration to the young people that constant efforts, patience, and perseverance, coupled with strong determination can bring you success," the mayor said in a statement to Inquirer.net.
As for Mark Johnuel, he never even expected to pass the exam in the first place. In an interview with SunStar, he revealed that he couldn't answer numerous test questions even though he's been reviewing every day since finishing med school.
"First subject okay, sige, kaya pa. Second subject nawalan ako ng pag-asato a point na naapektuhan 'yungthird subject ko na kahitvery simple question,hindi ko na siya masagutan ng tama. So after that exam, sabi ko parang hindi na siguro and it would take a miracle to change that second and third subject," he shared. "Until the last subject—the 12—sinabi ko na lang naI'll just give my best and let God do the miracles."
Now that he's officially a doctor, Mark Johnuel plans to specialize in internal medicine and work in the province or at a government hospital. He also advises his fellow aspiring doctors to go for their dreams, regardless of how intimidating they may seem.
"It's always a reminder to myself to pursue my dreams no matter how lofty they may seem. I don't want to end up wasting my life regretting things that I could've done," he concluded.
