A Step-by-Step Guide to Making a Font Using Your Own Handwriting

Being a student in the middle of the pandemic is harder than it looks. From all the adjustments these students are doing on a daily basis, they would easily grab any school hacks or tips just to make this academic year a bit easier for them.
From the most ideal and affordable gadgets to use to highlighter hex codes for online notes, to the best pambahay OOTDs that are online-class friendly, to doing a K-pop song parody, these kinds of stuff became useful for them in adapting to online schooling. And it doesn’t stop there. A viral post on Facebook shows how this student used his own handwriting to make a font through a website—perfect if you are tinatamad or too pressured to write notes while your teacher is talking.
The author of the post is Jan Lean Baliong, a 20-year-old BS Information Technology student from STI College. In an interview with Candy, he said that he discovered Calligraphr.com when he was scrolling through a list of websites that customize fonts. According to Jan, the website helped him a lot especially since programming needs time management, so it saved him from writing a lot of notes.
“Nakatulong po siya sa pag jo-journal ko. Nabawasan time sa pagsulat and mukhang sulat kamay po talaga [siya]. I [also] think it's another way of being creative.”
If you are also a student who needs to save time from writing notes as much as possible and also want to get ~creative~ with note-taking, here’s how you can use your handwriting as fonts for your digital notes.
Go to Calligraphr.com
Log in to your account or you can create a new account for free if it's your first time visiting the site. Then confirm your account through your e-mail.
Create your template.
After you log in, you will see the home screen that says "Your first steps." Then click "Create a Template."
You can create your own template or you can use the different templates they provided. Take note that there are limited characters or ligatures on every template if you are only using the free version. You have to upgrade to pro if you want to rewrite other characters aside from the alphabet, numbers, and punctuation marks which are already included in the free version.
Download the template.
After creating the template, click "Download Template" and just tweak the file name, file format, and size of template cells. After you download, the file should look like this:
Print the template and write the corresponding characters on the paper.
Scan the template.
After you fill it up, you can now scan the paper.
Upload the file on the website.
After scanning, go back to Calligraphr website then click "My Fonts" then under that, click "Upload Template," then select the template file. When the file opens, click "Add Characters To The Font."
Edit your characters.
When you finally added your template, you can edit each character if you want by just clicking on it. You can adjust the size, shade, and you can remove the excess ink around the character for a cleaner look, then save it.
Build your own font name then download it.
After checking and editing, click "Build Font" on the upper part of the screen.
Install the font on your computer.
Click the downloaded file then click "Install" and you're done. You can now use it alongside other fonts provided by MS Word.
