Just like most of Batch 2016, Wynona Pauline Catapang recently graduated college. But what makes her story different is she finished three college degrees at only 21 by taking a double major course at St. Scholastica's College.
If you're inspired by her story and want to take (or shift to) a double major course in college, too, you're in luck because we asked Wynona herself for five tips on surviving a double major program in college!
- Be strategic.
"My number one tip on surviving a double major program is that you should be strategic. It's tough [to be studying two courses at once] that's why you should know how to strategize."
- Be a great multitasker.
"Being strategic also means you should be a great multitasker. We did that for 5 years and it worked!"
- Learn to adapt.
"In the double major program, you'll get to meet different people for every subject. So it's necessary to learn how to engage with people in different conditions."
- Be brave!
"If you have questions or concerns, don't hesitate to ask. If you feel like you're being left out, don't be afraid to ask for help."
- Ora et Labora (Prayer and Work).
"Since we wanted to survive, sometimes what we did was Ora et Labora Labora Labora Labora. Hahaha."
She also shared both the advantages and disadvantages that come with working towards three degrees.Â
Advantages:
- "Maraming internships and opportunities in the future. I had four internships: three in Psychology and one in Mass Comm."
- "I think if you end up working in a good company, yung double major course wouldn't be limited to just one job. Especially if the company is hiring positions that are relevant to both of your courses, you could choose from any of it!"
- "My professor once told us that we should not limit ourselves to one skill only. For us to be marketable in the corporate world, kung kaya natin mag-earn or mag-aral ng isa or dalawa pang skills, why not?"
Disadvantages:
- "Lagi kaming ligaw ng friend ko. Because we have different classmates in every subject, we don't immediately know about the class announcements. Tatanungin namin yung class representative ng isang block about quizzes or assignments tapos hindi pala namin sila kaklase. Hahaha. It was very confusing at first but we got used to it."
- "Another disadvantage is the schedule. We had 27-30 units every semester and our schedules were usually from 7:30 AM until 7:30 PM. We always had overlapping subjects because of the tight scheds, but tiyaga lang talaga siguro and patience!"
