How the Morena Culture Has Evolved from Shaming to Strengthening

Brown is beautiful!

Morena is a term most Filipino people use to describe women with brown skin. Nowadays, the word continues to evolve as a trait that started as something one may want to get rid of, to a trait that shows and empowers true Filipina beauty.

Ever since the Philippines was colonized by countries with dominantly fair-skinned citizens, the perception of beauty has mostly been about having a fair complexion. Because of this, the majority has always adored the fair and white color, brought about by the colonial mentality that is instilled in us as we continue to advocate and use soaps, lotions, glutathione, or other forms of whitening products just to attain that fair complexion we were made to dream about. More people wanted to have fairer skin because of how the media portrays it, not seeing how being morena is such a privilege that most Filipinos have.

It was almost only until Filipinos started to gain recognition in the modelling industry and in pageants such as Miss Universe that the perception on beauty, specifically on skin tone, changed. Being morena started to be acceptable and beautiful. More and more of us are getting noticed, like famous Filipina models in the industry like Danica Magpantay and Justine Biticon, Asia's Next Top Model Cycle 5 winner Maureen Wroblewitz, as well as Filipina beauty queens like Venus Raj, Janine Tugonon, Megan Young, Kylie Versoza, and Pia Wurtzbach. They are just a few reasons we should never be ashamed or insecure of our skin color. These people truly are an inspiration to all the Filipinos and proof as to why morena beauty should be celebrated.

The acceptance of morena beauty and how it is gradually putting a mark in the world is truly spectacular. From something that has been unappreciated for so long, we are now learning to love our own uniqueness and we are truly becoming proud of our own.

We may still have a long way to go in embracing the morena beauty because of all the whitening products that are still rampant in our country, but this is definitely a great start.
