Holiday Traditions You Can Start This Year

The lights and decorations are all up and the gifts are all wrapped and ready to be given. Christmas is just around the corner and there are a lot of Chistmas traditions that are probably on your to-do list already—customary Simbang Gabi and Misa de Gallo, family reunions for Noche Buena, exchange gifts among friends, and more. But if you want to try new and fun ways to celebrate the season of giving, you can start your own traditions this December! Go ahead and put these new things on the list, have an unforgettable and fun Christmas, then do them again next year, and well, every year after that!

Have a Christmas movie marathon with your family. Holiday break means at least two weeks with no school. Why not add to the family reunion tradition by gathering everyone in the living room on Christmas day and having a movie marathon? Watch your favorite family, Christmas-themed movies like Elf, Home Alone, The Grinch, Love Actually, and more! Make everyone excited to laugh and cry again to the same movies for 2015, too.

Go caroling with your barkada. Caroling is a well-known Christmas tradition, and maybe when you were a kid you would always join in, but when was the last time you did this? Call up your closest friends and spread the Christmas cheer by providing music throughout your neighborhood! It’ll be a lot of fun, just going door to door and belting your favorite carols with your friends (just make sure you can carry a tune, cause your neighbors might not like it if you can’t). Make it a tradition and try to get better every year (and maybe before you know it, you’ll be Pentatonix level already).

Cook dinner for your loved ones. If on Christmas day you’re used to just being fed dinner, because your family just eats out, or your parents, household help, or titos and titas are the ones who prepare dinner—this is a challenging tradition you should definitely take on! Just for one day a year, let them rest for the day, and take on the kitchen (and possibly invite your siblings and cousins to join you). Learn how to cook a perfect ham, or your lola’s secret roast beef recipe, or try something completely new that might just be your Christmas dinner specialty. You never know, your creation might just be the highlight of the season!

Have a family kris kringle. Secret Santa is a well-known tradition in schools or among your barkada, but only a few girls initiate the same gift-giving tradition for their families! Why not tell your parents about it and give it a try? It’s a lot of fun for the whole family and it’ll be extra challenging to be secretive about your gift because you all live in the same house! Also, it’ll be a tradition worth looking forward to next year, because then you’ll have to one up each other’s gifts from this year!

Volunteer for a cause. There are lots of less fortunate people who aren’t able to spend Christmas as comfortably as others. Spend a little time this season to give to these people and spread the Christmas spirit! Ask your local Church, your school, or your barangay about any outreach projects they might be organizing over the break. You can also volunteer at some local NGOs that have programs, such as the Make A Wish Foundation, World Vision, The Heart at Play Foundation, and more. Just make sure you go with your parents or an adult! It will definitely be one unforgettable Christmas.
