Let's admit it: college in its academic sense is enough to drive us insane. With all that it consumes, we barely even have time for ourselves. We don't even get adequate sleep! It has become a luxury we could no longer afford with everything on our plate. Because of the gravity of the academic load, there is a tendency to miss out on relevant matters such as extra-curricular activities. Others would think of it as an unnecessary nuisance or perceive it as a hindrance to attaining the best grades in this competitive academic world of college—which is not the case. Although we are sent to college to learn and earn that degree, we must not limit ourselves to only this. Here are reasons straight from holistic college achievers that will convince you to put your acads first but never acads only.
- It will help you master yourself.
By letting yourself do tasks and handle situations beyond the four walls of the room, you allow yourself to grow. You give more time for yourself by discovering the extent of what you can and can't do.
"Successful people will always tell you that the first step to success is to know yourself. And knowing yourself also includes knowing how far you can go and stretch. This is why I believe joining extra-curricular activities is important, it allows you to learn the sides of yourself that you would never ever know unless you start pushing yourself out of your comfort zone." Nikko Calledo, Straw Wars PH founder
"By joining extracurricular activities, I discovered more about my own strengths and weaknesses, established connections and built lasting friendships, and overall developed my totality as a person. This kind of growth would not have been possible had I merely focused on my academics alone, that's why I'm very grateful that I took the chance of stepping out of my comfort zone and being active outside the four walls of the classroom." Genin Raya Amiscaray, Top Outstanding Student for Region 7
"Being involved in extracurricular activities helps me stay fit in mind, body, and spirit. Through these, I am able to build my character and values, exercise and keep my body healthy, and strengthen my connection with Him who blesses me with knowledge and skills." Jed Diamante, Rookie of the Year, UAAP Season 78 Men's football
- It will broaden your network.
Venturing into extra-curricular activities involve working with people from all walks of life—from presidents and CEOs to beggars on the street. Through this engagement you will be able to establish connections (one that you cannot find within your classrooms) that will be of great aid to you and your future. Furthermore, this will also pave the way for you to celebrate diversity and acknowledge its strength.
"Other than knowing yourself, joining extra-curricular activities also allows you to know others who share the same passion with you. You get inspired by their ideas and the person they have become, and in the process, you become the inspiration yourself." Nikko Calledo, Straw Wars PH founder
- It will make you realize that there is more to life than just your own.
Because you live beyond your books and classroom, you are able grasp that there is a far bigger world out there. With this realization comes the hope that you will be able to live more than just for your own in this lifetime. This will drive you to stand for what is really close to your heart—may it be the environment, human rights, LGBTQ equal rights, war against poverty, and the like.
"It's always a win-win situation when you strive to achieve for more. You nurture yourself with more knowledge, and you open yourself to endless possibilities of making a difference in another person's life through what you do." Jed Diamante, Rookie of the Year, UAAP Season 78 Men's football
Joining extra-curricular activities means stepping out of your comfort zone. But the place outside your comfort zone is your magic zone—this is where you get to be a better version of yourself, to reinvent and fail all at the same time but still be able to grow and learn. Although there is doubt and fear when doing so, it's normal. It grounds you. It humbles you. The fear lowers your expectations and choices. However, you should never be afraid of taking risks and trying new things because this means deviating from the routinely life we live—the life that makes us feel like we are in plateau when in fact we are born to climb mountains.
Join as many extracurricular activities as you can, because the lessons and memories you will have are the ones you'll surely remember and be grateful for the rest of your life. Conquer your worries and fear and be braver. Choose to be better. Choose to be ~extra~. Since that why it's called extra-curricular—it will require you to be extra—extra brave, extra strong, and extra persevering.
So start joining extra-curricular activities and experience it for yourself!
