People deal with negativity differently. Some take it lightly, some fight fire with fire. Others get a bit more creative to find a meaningful response to it.
For this content creator and entrepreneur, she handled it the best way she can: by making statement shirts. Ayn Bernos is a Manila-based content creator and entrepreneur who owns a brand called Morena the Label, which sells empowering statement shirts for her fellow morenas and morenos.
Ayn recently starred in one of the music videos for QUEST's latest EP called Para Sa'yo, and instead of seeing comments regarding the music video itself, several people online decided to leave unkind remarks regarding her body.
In a Facebook post, Ayn writes, "Today I saw my friend @jointhequest’s Facebook announcement of his new EP (which is AMAZING btw, check it out), where I had the honor to play the lead for one of his music videos! However, in the same breath I saw a couple of rude comments about my boobs, or lack thereof."
In response, Ayn decided to make a powerful statement—and put them on shirts. "Masyado akong maitim? Morena t-shirts. Dalawa likod ko? Okay! Here you go," Ayn adds. In front, her shirts include the message: "Embrace your flaws. What flaws?" At the back of it reads, "That's really cute of you to shame me for something I'm not ashamed of."
Her post about making these powerful statement shirts has received positive attention, with over 4,000 reactions and 1,000 shares on Facebook. People in the comments are leaving supportive reactions towards Ayn's creative and impactful response to body shaming.
On choosing these specific phrases to make a statement, Ayn says, "Why is liking myself so revolutionary? People applaud me for embracing my 'morena skin' and 'flat chest' and 'round face' flaws... when in reality, I honestly do not see them as flaws at all! And you shouldn’t either."
If you resonate with her message and want to cop a piece of her statement shirt, you can place an order on www.ideologie.studio/flaws. Each shirt costs P499 and comes in two colors: white with red print and black with white print.
