Getting to study overseas is a mere aspiration for many young individuals. But University of the Philippines-Diliman student Gia Luistro managed to turn this dream into reality at age 21.Â
Just a few weeks ago, Gia was accepted to the Yale Norfolk School of Art 2022, a prestigious six-week undergraduate summer residency program that aims to train 26 student artists. Coming from two whole years of Zoom classes in the Philippines, Gia herself acknowledges that Yale’s hands-on pedagogy was a bit of a learning curve at first. Add to that the country’s chilly weather, the residency has been a real adjustment for the Painting major.Â
But growing pains aside, Gia’s been enjoying her time in Connecticut so far. Since most of their discussions are site-specific, she gets the opportunity to learn more about her practice by exploring the lush, picturesque campus. She’s even considering applying to a graduate program at the university after she completes her undergraduate curriculum at UPD.Â
Besides that, Gia only has one more ~big dream~ in life: To give back something that would contribute to the progress of the creative industry locally. With her brutally honest artistry and down-to-earth lifestyle, we have no doubts that Gia will do exactly that.Â
