Local film enthusiasts will most likely already be familiar with director and writer Antoinette Jadaone. Better known in the local film scene as "Direk Tonet," she has masterminded several award-winning films that were also well received by fans.

She has worked with top stars in the local entertainment industry, including Angelica Panganiban, Jodi Sta. Maria, and Vilma Santos, as well as some of the most popular love teams like Nadine Lustre and James Reid, Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil, and Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia.

Is Direk Tonet one of your favorite homegrown directors? Here are a few things you should know about her:

Jadaone graduated from UP.

Direk Tonet is an Iskolar ng Bayan. She went to University of the Philippines where she initially took up Broadcast Communications before ultimately deciding to shift and major in Film instead.
She’s also worked on commercials before.

She is an award-winning filmmaker.

Direk Tonet has worked on several films that might sound familiar to you, including Six Degrees of Separation From Lilia Cuntapay, That Thing Called Tadhana, English Only, Please, You’re My Boss, The Breakup Playlist, #WalangForever, Love You to the Stars and Back, Never Not Love You, Alone/Together, and Fan Girl.

She has won awards at the Metro Manila Film Festival, including Best Screenplay and Best Original Story for English Only, Please as well as Best Original Story for #WalangForever. Her first official film, Six Degrees of Separation From Lilia Cuntapay, has garnered several accolades at the Cinema One Originals Digital Film Festival.

She looks up to Joyce Bernal.

Just like us, Direk Tonet also looks up to her own set of idols for inspiration. In an interview with Inquirer, Direk Tonet said that she looks up to and admires Direk Joyce Bernal. It was Direk Joyce who gave her her "first break" in the film industry, as a script continuity supervisor for the film Paano Kita Iibigin starring Piolo Pascual and Regine Velasquez.

Jadaone has a podcast with Juan Miguel Severo

Direk Tonet teamed up with spoken word artist and fellow writer Juan Miguel Severo for a podcast called Ang Walang Kwentang Podcast and it's incredibly relatable. So far, they've tackled topics like college heartbreaks, fitness, pop culture, horror stories, high school life, and e-numans. You can listen in on their conversations via Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Google Podcasts.

She is engaged to Dan Villegas.

In February 2020, Direk Tonet announced that she is now engaged to fellow director Dan Villegas. The two directors have also worked together on various titles such as The Breakup PlaylistRelaks, It’s Just Pag-ibig, and English Only, Please.

One of her movies has one of the longest credits.

At this point, who hasn't watched That Thing Called Tadhana? Starring Angelica Panganiban and JM de Guzman, the film was a refreshing take on rom-coms that resembled the style of the Before Trilogy

The film is now avaiable for streaming on Netflix, but before it launched to critical and commercial success, the film and the team behind it have gone through quite a journey. While the film was already in post-production, the team encountered a hiccup. They were being charged a huge lump of money to be able to use Whitney Houston's song "Where Do Broken Hearts Go?" in the film but were unfortunately already out of budget.

Instead of changing the song (which would mean that they would have to reshoot everything), the crew decided instead to ask their friends and eventually the public if they'd be willing to donate to raise the needed amount, and in return, their names would be included in the closing credits. Surprisingly, they were able to raise the needed amount, which explains why the film's closing credits were unusually longer than any other local film.

She has a way with words.

Direk Tonet might most often be associated with being a director, but she’s always been an avid writer. Aside from directing, she has also worked on the screenplay for her films. But if that’s not enough proof for you, you can also just head to her Twitter account for your daily dose of witty and relatable one-liners.
