While some musicians lived and breathed music even in college, many of the popular artists today started out with a totally different career path in mind. Music used to just be a side project or a hobby for them, but now it's become their main hustle. Below, check out the courses these artists took in college:
Jeremy Zucker
One of Jeremy's most popular songs is "comethru", which garnered him fans worldwide. Jeremy initially started out on a pre-med track in college. He graduated studied Molecular and Cellular Biology at Colorado College before committing to a full-time music career.
Most known for her global hit "I Love You 3000", Stephanie didn't think music was a career option she could pursue at first. She was supposed to major in Psychology in college, but her debut single blew up and opened an opportunity for her to work on more music. She dropped her second song, "How We Used To", from her latest EP, AM:PM, on January 14, 2021.
The frontman of the English pop rock band The 1975 briefly studied music in college but eventually dropped out to be able to focus on making music and writing songs. "School was just a tedious imposition, getting in the way of me being a pop star. I was just looking at the clock, waiting until I could go and do it," he says in an interview with The Guardian. Their discography include "Robbers", "Chocolate", and "The Sound".
Lewis Capaldi, known for tracks like "Someone You Loved" and "Forever", complete a Higher National Diploma in Music at New College Lanarkshire. He immediately got signed under Universal Music after graduating.
R&B singer Nicole Zefanya aka NIKI studied music in college under a scholarship. While in school, she was already keen on working on her own music. Her most popular songs include "lowkey" and "Plot Twist".
Before becoming "Keshi" in the music scene and dropping lo-fi bops like "2 soon" and "like i need u", Casey Luong graduated from nursing school and briefly worked as a nurse. During college, Casey has already been low-key working on songs under the alias "Keshi". "I didn't want anybody to know I was trying this new path," he shares to VICE.
Conan was a film major at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). While in college, the "Heather" singer was also leading a double life as a recording artist. Due to his jam-packed music schedule, Conan had to stop attending classes.
The My Chemical Romance frontman studied Fine Arts at New York City's School of Visual Arts. Aside from his music career, Way is also known for creating the comic book and now Netflix series The Umbrella Academy.
