It's going to be easy, they said. You'll have a lot of time for yourself, they said.
LIES.
Taking up a communications course isn't easy. No field of study is, believe us. Even if they tell you how "easy" it is to study communications, don't believe them. It is not. Here are some of the things you should know before you take up this course in college.
- You're studying the art and science of human communication.
If you think that's an easy job, then you probably haven't had misunderstandings yet. Just look around you and there are so many arguments and hate because of one wrong word used or one quotation taken out of context. Is communication easy? NO.
- You will still need Math.
Hate to break this to you, Candy Girls. Most college students finish their degrees with a thesis or a case study. How do you analyze data? Well, most of the time it's with numbers, which will involve a ton of formula and charts and graphs and the list goes on and on and on.
- Expect to work during weekends and your vacation.
Most communication students have to do production work. And because we don't have enough resources, we try producing creative work while we're on vacation or on holidays so that we don't have to spend to have a different location. It's strategic to do prod work on holidays, too, so that our fellow students who are also our talents can work with us...for free (after we convince them a thousand times that we'll just treat them to lunch).
- You won't always be just writing and just speaking in public.
You also have to do some dirty work, like talk to different people and travel to different places to gather data. Sometimes, you also have to work undercover to experience things yourself.
- You have to get rid of your fear of being in the spotlight.
No matter how difficult that may be. Some productions will be needing extra talents, so you have to help out...unless you want your group mates to hate you and give you a failing grade in your peer evaluation.
- You also have to get rid of your fear of people.
Because you will be working with people all. The. Time. Be it for interviews or for prod work or to understand communication better, you have to be around people and actually experience communication yourself to better understand concepts.
- You have to check yourself all the time.
Well, we all do. But communication majors have to, especially when sharing information and reports. In this day and age where fake news is everywhere, students who are studying this degree have to check themselves every single time to make sure they don't add to misunderstandings and pointless arguments.
Thought studying human communication is easy? Now you know a part of the truth. It is not.
