They say that we are our worst enemy and to a certain extent, it has some truth in it. We are always so hard on ourselves, pushing our bodies to our breaking point, and setting such high standards, which sometimes don't necessarily equate to reaching our dreams and achieving our goals. In fact, there are instances that instead of bringing out the best versions of ourselves, we are left with low self-esteem, depressed, and swimming in our pool of self-doubt. To help you change this bad habit this 2016, we have listed a few things you should stop saying to yourself to bring out the best in you this year. Read on below!
- "I'm not good enough."
Comparing yourself to other people is probably the number one source of insecurity and destructor of self-esteem. Especially in this time of social media where we spend hours scrolling through feeds and timelines of people who seem to be living the perfect life, throwing ourselves our own pity party happens more than ever. This year stop comparing yourself to others. Keep in mind that someone will always be better than you and that’s completely okay! You have your own strengths—focus on it and do great things. Instead of wallowing over your insecurities, discover your own unique potentials, test unchartered waters, and seize new opportunities. Learning to celebrate other's accomplishments instead of feeling jealous or inadequate can also help you feel genuine happiness.
"I can't do it."
Stop making excuses this 2016. You CAN do anything that you put your heart and mind into. Nothing is impossible! Remember that it is what you think you are not that holds you back. Don’t be disappointed when you don’t get the response or result you want immediately. The best things in life are a product of patience and hard work. Just keep working on what you want and don’t pressure yourself too much. You’ll get there and you will definitely rise!
"I'm a failure."
First off all, know that it's very human to make mistakes. All of us have and will continue to make mistakes. Never tell yourself that you're a failure or stupid. Change the way you react to your failures. Instead of self-loathing, worrying about failing, and letting your mistakes get to you, shake it off and consider them a life lesson. You can't really turn back time to undo it. You can, however, learn from it and improve. Mistakes are there for self-growth. You're courageous for always getting back up and moving forward. You tried, you learned, and that's what really matters.
''I hate myself.''
Learn to love and accept yourself—flaws and all. The more you understand your worth, the happier and more confident you become. Be contented with what you have and stop setting such high expectations for yourself. Everyone experiences a low point in his or her life, so give yourself a break and embrace every bit of your life. Celebrate yourself with tons of love and compassion, and you will find yourself closer towards self-acceptance.
"I should have...''
This year, stop being too hard on yourself for the wrong decisions you have made. Accept the fact that people can make bad decisions not because you are a bad person but because, well, you're human. You may not have noticed but your wrong decisions might have even brought about something good! Forgive yourself and focus on the future. Whatever those regrets are, they are all in the past. You’ve learned from it and now it is time to live in the present and move on.
"It's too late."
It's never too late to start now. Whether it's achieving a life long dream, creating a new goal, or even just spending more time with your family, start now. You're never too old, too young, too late, or too busy. Start doing what you've always wanted to do and stop making excuses. Don't worry too much about the specifics and don't be afraid to make sacrifices. If you really want it you'll find a way to make it happen!
