It's mind-boggling enough that we spend almost the whole day in school. If that wasn't enough, the minute we get home, there may still be a pile of homework waiting for us. Now, where in the world do we find the motivation to do all that? You might find it after 4 hours of surfing the net, but what we all need is an instant boost of motivation. Here are a few tips that might help you. But remember, some ways might not be as effective on other people!
- Ready your study space.
Depending on what works best for you, your study area should be there to put you in the mood to study. If having a clear desk helps you concentrate, do just that. If having a lot of stuff on your table makes you feel more productive, put small piles around your study area. Just make sure that it doesn’t eat up so much of your time, and whether you hide your school materials or lay them all out, make sure that you know exactly where they are.
- Schedule your day.
This is a more goal-oriented form of the traditional checklist. We all know how satisfying it feels to tick a task off the things we need to do, but this won't work if our time management is all over the place. Jot down everything you need to do, and think about how long it should take you to finish a certain task in a productive way. Be as realistic as you possibly can, and then stick to the time pressure. The satisfaction at the end of the day will do you wonders.
- Have a jar of quotes.
Have a jar filled with strips of paper that contain motivational quotes. Gather lines online or from some of your favorite books that inspire you. You can print them out using a small font or write them by hand if you feel like it. Stuff them in a jar, and display it on your work area for easy access. Quotes work especially well when you don't feel like doing anything at all. These simple lines can be an instant boost to your spirits.
- Prepare some snacks.
I don't know about the rest of humanity, but I'm pretty sure having a nibble every now and then makes me believe that I'm ready for anything. Snacks are great; just don't eat too much or you might end up becoming sleepy. Brain food such as berries, dark chocolate and nuts can be some of the healthy tidbits you can munch on before, during and after you study. You can also prepare something extra tasty to serve as a positive reinforcement after you finish all your goals for the day.
- Set the right mindset.
No matter what you do, if you keep on telling yourself over and over again that you're not in the mood to study, you never will be. The least you can do is try and guide your mind to the right direction. Repeat to yourself that you are not going to slack off this time. You are going to be productive. Trust me, this is so much better than psyching yourself to be lazy.
