3 Dos and Don'ts When Deciding on a College Course
There are many factors to be considered in choosing a course in college and a lot of us can agree that our parents have a major impact when deciding what to take up. Some parents give their 100% support and approval for you to follow your dreams and do what you love, but there are some, who, even if they don't say it directly, feel that you could do better in life with a course that will land you a good job in the future. So if you're confused, conflicted, or if you keep asking yourself, "Is this really what I want?" here are some reminders you might need in following the course or track you've always wanted to pursue.
- Do your research.
If your parents don't understand why you want to take the course or track you want to pursue, show them why it's perfect for you. Take time to actually understand the course or track then make your parents understand how this course would benefit you. This will show your parents how serious you are about course and how determined you are to take.
- Don't let anyone decide for you.
Your family, friends, guidance counselors, and teachers may be right in suggesting what they think are the best courses for you. But at the end of the day, you're the only one who knows the real you and what you want to become, so follow your heart and don't allow yourself to live not knowing what could have been just because other people say so.
- Don't be afraid to make mistakes.
If you make a mistake, embrace it and learn from it. What is a little downfall to a lifetime of success? Let yourself stand again. There will always be people who are willing to help—even the ones who you think are not in favor of your chosen course. Your parents may not be 100% sold on your chosen course, but that doesn't mean they will support you less. They'll still be there to guide you even when the going gets tough until you can rise and start over.
As millennials we have so many things we want to accomplish. There are so many dreams we want to reach. It's time for us to do something about it and actually prove to everyone that we can do it. We can be great in the field that we want. It's a big, scary world out there, but that's what makes life interesting, so do what you love and the rest will follow.
