Come December 16, many Filipinos young and old will be getting up at dawn for Simbang Gabi. The nine-day series of masses is a Filipino tradition best spent with family, friends, and well, lots of food.

If you've always been religiously honoring this unique Filipino tradition, then you probably know what to anticipate – from the sights to the sounds to the smells. If, on the other hand, you have yet to complete Simbang Gabi, then this could be the year that you finally do!

Just what are the things people who attend Simbang Gabi can all relate to? We list ten of them below.

  1. That feeling when you wake up in a panic, automatically thinking you missed the mass already. Relax! It's only 3 a.m. You can still snooze for an hour or two.

  2. Having festive breakfasts with the whole family. The holiday season is definitely your favorite for many reasons – one of them the food. And the breakfast spread is always another motivation for you to get up early.

  3. Wrapping yourself up in a comfy sweater to battle the coldweather. Also, you can finally use that cute scarf you bought months ago and that pair of boots you don't get to wear often.

  4. Standing outside the small chapel because you failed to arrive early and all the seats are taken. You don't mind, though, because there's nothing more precious than hearing an inspiring sermon while feeling the Christmas breeze on your face.

  5. The smell of butter and coconut doesn’t get old. Who cares if this is your fifth serving of puto bumbong in just two days? It’s the holidays, #treatyourself.

  6. Attending mass with your girlfriends. Of course, you're still with your families, but you and your girls all come together after service for a quick chat over puto bumbong and bibingka.

  7. Seeing your neighborhood crush in the wee hours of the morning, for nine days straight. Don't let him distract you, though. You came to honor Mary and to observe areligious tradition, so don't get sidetracked!

  8. Rushing to get to your early class and fighting off sleep the entire day. You consume more coffee than the usual during this time, that’s for sure.

  9. Looking forward to Misa de Gallo and making your wish. You feel really proud of all your efforts and cannot wait to make your wish. Some may say there's no guarantee it will come true, but it won't hurt to try.

  10. Having a deeper understanding of the season, thanks to the daily gospels. You always leave the dawn mass feeling reenergized and further anticipating Christmas. This makes the season all the more meaningful to you.

Are you ready to wake up real early tomorrow?
