A fun and quirky brand grounded on determination, passion, and dedication, read on to find out how this young mind brought Skinned to life for this week's "How I Started."
How it started. "I actually wanted to sell bags at first, but my savings then weren't enough to buy the stocks that I needed. So I thought of a different product the required a smaller capital and would not take up too much space for storage. And that's how Skinned was born."
Why Skinned? "It wasn't my intention to focus on selling pins at first. I just wanted to offer a variety of accessories in my store. But during the time when I was still conceptualizing my brand, there was an issue going around involving Zara saying that they stole designs from an independent artist. At that time the artist involved was selling pins, which helped put quirky pins in the trend list."
Young entrepreneur. "Personally, I find being a young entrepreneur really hard—especially when my capital relies only on my savings from my daily allowance. In addition to that, some people tend to belittle me just because I'm still an undergrad."
Drawing inspiration. "I get inspiration from my life experiences. You see, I am still in college and currently taking up Multimedia Arts and Sciences at Mapua Institute of Technology. I've been in school for 6 years now. At my age, ideally, I should have been working already and that thought constantly frustrates me. And so I thought, why not earn money while studying? Time flies so fast and I want to maximize my time."
Flying solo. "Right now, I work alone because I want to learn and familiarize myself with everything that involves Skinned. So when the time comes when I let someone join me in my venture, I can properly teach them the ropes."
Little challenges. "There were several bumps that I encountered in our digital store—from finding the right supplier to managing orders. But the most common problem almost all online shops encounters is looking for the perfect third party courier. We have received claims that some items are broken or even crushed by the courier, which is a huge challenge for Skinned because it affects the brand's customer service, product, and Skinned itself to an extent."
"Quality over quantity. We have limited stocks per design because I want to give a sense of exclusivity to our valued customers. We don't want to overkill the quality by the quantity of our designs. Although limited, we make sure that each customer gets the best quality from us. This is our vow to them.
"Excellent Service. I accommodate ALL inquiries and never leave all messages hanging. As much as possible, I make sure all of my customers’ queries are properly addressed."
What's next? "I want Skinned to expand and have a wider network. But I don't want it to remain in the digital realm only. I hope it can have a physical shop or pop up shop of its own in the future."

To young budding entrepreneurs. "Take every chance you get and every opportunity you see and take action! Instead of just talking about your plans to your friends or posting them on social media, turn your plans into reality. You have to move. More importantly, never be arrogant. Be nice to everyone you're going to meet and work with along the way."
