Denim and military jackets are cool and trendy, but you can up the ante of these rad outerwear in a snap by jazzing them up with quirky pins. Isabel Aguas knew how pins could turn a blah outfit into a striking one, and started her cool brand Hopskotch. Find out how this young entrepreneur joined the pin race with her biz as she shares with us how she started Hopskotch.

When it started. "Hopskotch started in 2013."

How it started. "I found this stall at a local flea market that was disposing really cool vintage pins at two pesos each. I hoarded a bunch and pinned them on my denim jacket in an attempt to accessorize. I kept on looking for more to add to my growing collection, but to no avail. So I decided to create Hopskotch."

Why Hopskotch? "The thing I liked most about pins was the fact that it served as conversation starters between myself and random people I meet. When worn, these little pieces of metal have the power to tell stories so I coupled that with a cause close to my heart. For me, kids are precious little cupcakes and none of them deserve to be deprived of the right to learn and create. So for every Hopskotch pin purchase, 10 pesos is donated to a school supply fund that assists underprivileged children in Manila, one area at a time."

Young entrepreneur. "On days when it feels like a lot to handle, I go back to square one, and remind myself that Hopskotch is a blessing. Things only appear difficult when you lose focus on why you're doing it in the first place, but other than that it's very rewarding to be able to create something that could potentially help people out."

Drawing inspiration. "To be honest, inspiration comes when I least expect it. I'm inspired by the fact that there's a group of people out there who share the same weird and quirky as I."

Flying solo. "I run the operations as a sole proprietor, but I’m lucky enough to have amazingly supportive friends and family. I get a ton of design help from my best friend, Nicole, because I put "Learn how to use Photoshop" on my New Year's resolutions list each year, but I still have yet to figure it out! #shame"

Little challenges. "I actually enjoy the challenge of juggling a full-time job and a thriving small business, but don't we all wish there were more than 24 hours in a day?"

Staying original. "I guess originality just shines through when something is made with love and purpose. Inspired by embracing individuality (mostly weirdness), Hopskotch encourages people to wear stories worth telling."

What’s next? "Aside from releasing fresh pin designs and new products as a short term goal (patches, anyone?), I hope to be able to help people tell their own stories by way of customized pins. I’m glad Hopskotch has such a long way to go because it means we have a ton of room to experiment!"

To budding young entrepreneurs. "I had hundreds of stocks waiting to be released and it took me close to a year of excuses as to why Hopskotch wasn't ready to be launched back in 2015. To be honest, I wish I didn’t wait that long because now there are a couple of other brands running the pin race as well. Nonetheless, I'd say just start smart, love what you do, and learn as you go."
