This Online Shop Creates Clothes Using Flour Sacks or Katsa

The sacks were bought from bakeries in Palawan.

Arapilak is an online shop located in Palawan that offers alternative products like bamboo straws, stainless straws, bamboo utensils, bamboo tumbler, and more to help reduce your carbon footprint. Arapilak means “no waste” in Cuyonan language. Aside from useful and earth-friendly products, the shop has also recently launched their own clothing line called Ba’law which means “awareness” in Cuyonan.

Just like their advocacy to support the environment, Ba’law uses flour sacks or katsa to create clothes. Jude Rivera—the founder of Arapilak—together with her team, buys empty flour sacks from bakeries in Palawan for P5 to P10 each, which they would then wash and dry. Then they give it to a dressmaker to create cute pieces like button-downs, camisa de chino, crop tops, shorts, and skirts that they sell for only P250 each, while dresses start at P450.

Inspired by vintage modern style, clothes made with katsa also remind us of traditional Filipino culture where they used flour sacks to make lampins, pillowcases, blankets, and other items.
