A belt’s only purpose used to be to cinch in loose waistbands. Now these buckled strips come in all sorts of yummy colors, and we can’t help but pull one on—even if our waistbands fit perfectly fine.

How to wear it:
Wide belts look best slung low on the hips and give off a rock-star vibe. Think Lenny Kravitz or Britney Spears with their tooled leather belts over hipster jeans. Narrower strips are great with simpler cuts like a plain fitted tee with tailored pants or capris.

Top trends:
Wide-buckled, distressed leather belts are fit for a rock star (or a cowboy, for that matter). Preppy canvas or garrison belts that come in acid bright colors or cool striped combos are instant pick-me-uppers. Scarves worn as belts add color to any outfit, and the tiangge staple sash-belts in quirky fabrics are trendy offshoots.

Do try:
Yards of grosgrain ribbons in different colors (at any bookstore or gift-wrapping stores). Tie one on over jeans for a shot of color or over your favorite capris for an unexpectedly feminine look.
