The University of the Philippines is known for its liberal education, which also translates to a certain extent of freedom of expression. How one presents oneself can usually lead to unwanted side comments and snide remarks, which you probably should just brush aside, by the way, but in the university, it's a relatively open campus where students and professors alike can dress themselves however they want every day and not be judged for it.

Fashion in UP is very diverse.

And by diverse, we mean a myriad of looks! Walking along the Academic Oval, you'll observe a cornucopia of styles. In the university, students are free to express themselves through their clothing.

We can go from crazy well-dressed…

The misconception in UP is that every day, people wear pajamas or pambahay to school. While this does happen (let's not talk about hell week in UP, please!), when needed or if they feel like it, UP students can clean up pretty well, too. Glammed up and pitch-ready in a snap!

During the rainy season, it is essential for every student to bring an umbrella and to dress according to the rainy weather. Having to walk from one class to another can get a little messy and muddy, giving them no choice, but to swap their trendy heels for a pair of comfy flats.

Flip-flops? No problem!

You'll probably see at least one person in flip-flops around the university every day. They're comfy and easy to slip on so what are those odd, questioning glances for?

We wear our school pride.

Many organizations and a couple of shops inside the Shopping Center or SC as the students like to call it, sell UP merchandise—from shirts to jackets to ID laces. While students are not required to purchase any of the merchandise, it does feel good to rock that iconic maroon colored shirt once in a while—especially during UAAP season!

But sometimes, people judge us for it: "You wear your UP ID? Yabang!"

There are times when being proud of one's school is misinterpreted to be boasting. Really, who isn't proud of their university in the first place?

In the end, comfort is always key.

In UP, there's really no pressure to wear what's trendy or cool and that's part of what makes the university so freeing. If you're a hoodie type of girl or a gothic lolita one, people won't ostracize you just because of your personal style. At the end of the day, whatever makes you feel comfortable and confident is what matters in the campus.
