From Our Readers: What It's Like to Never Be Loved in Return
What is love? Merriam-Webster dictionary defines love as a feeling of affection for another person. It didn't state that both parties must have mutual feelings for one another. It's a one-sided love and you're so lucky if you find someone who will love you back.
But not everyone is lucky. Even a guy who is believed acceptable to admit his feelings gets turned down by the one he likes, how much more for a regular girl who believes that it's not okay to admit her true feelings for the one she admires? What will she do? Will she break all the barriers just to tell him that she likes him? Of course not. I guess she would just sit down on a corner and wait until he notices her, until he feels the same way. But until then, she'll do nothing and just be contented with the relationship they have—friends, just friends.
I have this friend, Ella, who liked someone. But he fell in love with her friend. He never knew that she liked him anyway that's why it was okay. But Ella is not okay. She felt broken, depressed, and betrayed for a while until she decided to mend her heart again. And it started by forgiving, forgiving her friend and just being happy for her newfound love. As for the guy, Ella still hated her but since he makes her friend happy, that was enough.
She thought she was already happy but inside her heart, there was an empty spot. She needed to divert her attention to someone, someone more deserving of her love.
One day, someone caught her attention and instantly filled the empty space in her heart. Someone who made her happy. Someone who does absolutely nothing but still makes her smile every time she sees him. He wasn't ordinary. He is a working student. He managed his work and studies so well, and he was always on the Dean's List. He's handsome, too. He was adored by many and that made Ella back off. She doesn't want to be one of the girls who's just flirting with him. She's just quiet but slowly makes a way for them to be friends.
That was three years ago and they are already friends. She still sends him greetings. Occasionally, they would chat until midnight. He is her first thought in the morning and last at night. She often dreams of him, too. Ella loves her secretly. However after three years, she still not sure of what he feels for her. What he didn't know was that her feelings for him were unstable, too. She's confused if it's like or love. Is she waiting for too long already to the point that she has to stop liking him because it's already hurting her or should she still wait because this story holds the promise of forever?
