From Our Readers: This Is What Happiness Looks Like

It's liquid sunshine.

Happiness, for me, is a word not pondered often enough. Everyone says they want to be happy, that no matter where they are, what they're doing, or where their life ends up, all they want in the end is to be happy. But what does it mean to be happy? What is happiness? I don't have the exact answer to that question either. No one does, and I believe that no one ever will because happiness comes in many different forms.

In my mind, the shared aspect of all happiness is that it is a pure feeling that almost bubbles out from inside of us when untamed, and one that can simmer down to feel like liquid sunshine within us. I disregard the scentific explanations involving the chemicals within our brain because regardless of the science behind it, I believe happiness is a feeling we cannot truly explain. There is no substitution for it, and when it is missing, it is as if you are empty—you are not sure what you're missing exactly but knowing you want it back.

For me, happiness is in the form of blue skies, sunshine and endless fields of flowers, but it is also in the sound of the rain falling from the roof top, the warm smell of coffee and the scent of a new book. It lies in the ocean and its salty sprays, but also in the warmth of my comfortable sheets and my pillow which I could snuggle all day. But happines for me is not only in the natural world. It is in seeing the things made by humas, as well. The things we can make with our hands and minds and our bodies are simply astounding. To think that music, art, writing, dance and many more aspects of life have been created by us, these things  still leave me in awe. The unification of the natural and the created is a big deal for me.

My happiness is no doubt different from yours, and from the happiness of others as well, but we all want it, and I believe we need it. Take some time and consider the things that truly make you happy. Think of the things that never fail to bring you comfort and smile. Think of what brings you that bubbly feeling or that liquid sunshine. Keep these thoughts with you and you will make it through any hardship. Even if you cannot feel happy in your current situation, remember the times you have and remind yourself that you are strong, you are capable of anything, and no matter what, you can achieve your goals, even if it takes a lifetime.
