From Our Readers: This Is How You Can Break Down My Walls
I'm looking at you now and I can see how tired you are. Tired of all the pain, heartache, despair, and disappointments you've been experiencing over and over again. As a result, you've decided to build those walls around you. Walls so high and thick that no one can climb or pass through, keeping everyone from a far and safe distance.
Many times you've been hurt by people whom you trusted to never cause you pain. You've been betrayed by people whom you thought can never be dishonest to you and deceived by those people who promised to stay but ended up leaving you, hanging in midair. So here you are right now, trying to be solid as a rock just like your walls, unbending and unyielding. You wanted to spare yourself from all the emotional pain by living inside your own fortress, secluded from the outside world where you thought suffering is never ending and happiness is only ephemeral.
You wanted to spare yourself from all the emotional pain by living inside your own fortress, secluded from the outside world where you thought suffering is never ending and happiness is only ephemeral.
To people around you, you are a riddle, a puzzle, and a mystery all at once with no apparent way to get solved. And because you chose to be elusive, no one has really known your inner thoughts and desires. You were numb to disappointments because you learned not to have expectations. You're not easily attached to anyone because you know sooner or later that they'll leave. And by then, you will have to witness pain once more.
But now I took courage to talk to you because I want you to end that pain already. All along you thought you were protecting yourself by keeping everyone out of your life. Little did you know that it kept you locked in as well, and now you're trapped in your own prison. You created those walls to serve as your armor and cover the great wounds of the past. But every time you wear it, it steals the softness of your heart and detaches you from the tenderness of the world.
All along you thought you were protecting yourself by keeping everyone out of your life. Little did you know that it kept you locked in as well, and now you're trapped in your own prison.
You've been blinded by your pursuit to grow as a strong woman who is not relying her happiness to anyone. All your life you desired to be invulnerable that you've been obsessed with protecting your heart from getting hurt. But you've had enough. It's time for you to tear down those walls.
Stop pushing people away and start allowing them to enter your life because you are meant to be loved. I want you to look back and recognize every person who tried to go through those walls but failed because you were full of defenses. I want you to start hoping again and start trusting everyone reaching out to you because they deserve it and they are worth it, too.
I want you to allow your heart to break again and feel the pain because only then can you breathe again and realize that your heart will always be capable to feel love despite guarding it for so long.
I am staring at the mirror now and I can see how tired I am. Tired of hiding behind this seemingly strong armor that has served me for years. As I examine these long-standing walls I've built around me for the last time, I notice the cracks and fractures from all the people who tried to break it for me. Only now do I realize that I was the one hurting them after all as they try to smash this concrete around my heart.
To the girl who keeps building walls around herself, I hope you find the courage you need. Because I finally found mine. I'm opening my soul once again. I'm making myself vulnerable. I realized that happiness will always be a conscious choice. And this time, I will always choose to be happy. I will always choose to love. Break free. Tear down those walls.
