There might come a time when reading a book is probably the saving grace of a human being—or maybe your one-way ticket out of Boredomland or Awkward Town. Reading has become an essential part of our everyday lives. We simply cannot live a day without reading something.

We have come accustomed to the entertainment, joy, and knowledge it offers us. We no longer get scared or intimidated by the thought of being alone and just reading, a behavior we've probably had when we were younger. Now, we welcome the idea of books, novels, ebooks, and even text books with open arms! But reading isn't always about getting your own version of rainbows, butterflies, and pretty things. No, it is never about ending with a Happily Ever After.

The truth is, reading does not only encompass the feeling of happiness and elation and inspiration. It can end up hurting us, too.

It rips, shreds, and tears our hearts apart into tiny little pieces we can barely see. It can make us laugh and cry at the same time, too. It could make us want to have that promise of destiny and faith and happiness, but it can also make us swear off the promise of hope and chance.
