How do you know you found a friend for keeps?

We can never really tell, but here is what I learned from my experience. I'm not friendly and I'm not fond of making friends or having a lot of people around me. I'd rather have one friend and a book. But things changed when I went to college and I lost my high school friend.

It's funny how in a split second, I got 13 new friends. Funny how someone who's not fond having too many acquaintances got herself 13 new friends. At first it seems weird, but as time went by, I became comfortable having them around.

I am so blessed that I found them, because I didn't only get 13 new friends; I got myself 13 new sisters from another mother. To be honest, I was really scared—scared that I might lose them—that's why I didn't really open up myself to them. I would always hide what's on my mind. I would lie to them and tell them that I'm okay even if I'm not and even if I needed a shoulder to cry on, because I was scared that they might judge me and they might not understand me. That's where I was wrong; they're observers and they notice almost everything about me.

I would always hide what's on my mind. I would lie to them and tell them that I'm okay even if I'm not and even if I needed a shoulder to cry on, because I was scared that they might judge me and they might not understand me. That's where I was wrong; they're observers and they notice almost everything about me.

They wouldn't stop asking until I tell them what's wrong. Because of them, I learned that it's okay to show them who I really am. I'm so thankful because I was wrong, wrong that they would leave me hanging just like what the others did. They did not leave; they served as my shoulder to cry on. They did not judge me and they tried to understand me. That meant a lot to me.

So who are the friends worth keeping?

For me, the friends that are for keeps are those who will be with you not matter what happens—ups, downs, mischiefs, and everything! Keep your friends who are happy for you if you get through something because they won't drag you down. Keep your friends who stand by you if you fail, because they will tell you that you can do better next time. Keep your friends who support you when you're doing your thesis and research; they try their best to understand and not get mad at you for being lazy during the whole process. Keep those who stay with you even if you tell them you don't need them, the one you can cry with, the one you're not scared to show your vulnerable state to. And keep your friends that bring out the best in you, the ones who will push you to do what you really want because they believe in you.
