Believe it or not, we still live in a conservative society that can't seem to accept anything different from what they're used to.

In this modern society, feminism has broken borders. And yet, people still treat both genders without equality and equity. We still hear the phrases "Babae siya, e" or "Lalaki kasi siya, e" wherever we go. So what if I'm a girl and I love to play video games? So what if this guy loves to dance ballet?

Believe it or not, we still live in a conservative society that can't seem to accept anything different from what they're used to.

As a History major, I know what women have dealt with in the past. They were alive but they weren't living. They didn't have rights. We need to understand that in our history, women were silenced about their contributions to society. This led for us to underestimate women, and that view got passed on to each generation, including ours.

Imagine if we were experiencing what they experienced before? It would be terrible. Good thing feminist movements started moving to open our minds. But is that enough?

I, too, have experienced discrimination because of my gender. People assumed that I can't do certain things because it is supposedly a "man's job." We need to break this way of thinking that women are not capable of doing things on their own.

My professor told us a story about one of his previous students who took her internship in a government-based institution. One night, during her internship, they were drinking and one of her drunk supervisors sexually assaulted her. My professor had the audacity to tell us after that it was her fault because she was wearing a provocative ensemble. I debated with my professor after he told that story.

It is NEVER the fault of the victim; her outfit doesn't signify that she was provoking them. People should know better than that.

I am so sick of women living in fear of those sexists and catcallers out there. It angers me whenever I'm with my friends and these guys catcall us. I will not allow my fellow women to be silenced. I know I have to do something about this. I have to say something whenever someone catcalls me, so they would know that women aren't to be objectified.

Being a female with a strong personality also brings me various conflicts with my friends. I believe that I have a strong voice and I can influence other people and empower them. But some of my friends weren't really fond of this just because of the fact that I am a girl. Yes, I am a girl but I am a girl who has principles and beliefs; and I believe in equality.

Feminism is something that everybody should understand because it affects both sexes. Again, this isn't female dominance, but it's gender equality. So let us, ladies and gentlemen, empower one another and mutually respect one another. Be the kind of person who lets the other person sit on the train ride home peacefully and fearlessly because he or she seems tired. Be the kind of person who isn't afraid to speak your mind because you know what is right—no matter what gender you may have. And, most importantly, be the kind of person who treats people equally because they deserve to be treated like human beings.

Let us all be feminists.
