Silver Linings

As long as we remain hopeful, as long as we engrave in our minds that there is always a silver lining in everything, we will survive.

Remember the dystopian books you used to read where the characters are in some alternate universe with a hundred-year plague surrounding the city or those sci-fi movies where the government is forced to make a life-death decision to save their people? Well, the year 2020 didn’t exactly go into that kind of direction. We did face one long year of isolation, pain, and suffering similar to what we read and watched in literature only this time around the circumstances were real and the outcomes were actually felt. The atrocities brought by COVID-19 and several natural calamities impacted our life immensely that all we yearned for was to end a hell of a year.

Ironically, everyone was so excited for 2020 at the start of the year, a new decade, a sign of a great beginning. But as the months continue to lag leaving behind scars and weary eyes, we just wished that all these dilemmas would finally be over. As we anticipate the coming of another chapter in our lives and a chance to rebuild after a horrendous storm, we can decide that 2020 shouldn’t exactly have to leave a bad imprint in us as we bid our farewells.

After all, as cliché as it may sound, there is a silver lining in every situation--the thin thread of beauty against a cluster of rags. Now that we’ve moved past the year 2020, we reminisce the times we’ve fallen down. We collect those memories--even if they were the bad ones, we save them up and use them to improve ourselves. The events that happened in 2020 all have reasons why they occurred. It might’ve been for one’s self-improvement or for the betterment of the society. They weren’t all horrors meant to be forgotten in the deepest corners of our heads. They were also lessons meant to be remembered and learned. We witnessed the atrocities of the pandemic so that in 2021 we become more mindful of the actions we do to repress further transmission of not just the COVID-19 virus but any potential virus that may show up in the future. We witnessed our fellow citizens die and pass away because of injustice and natural disasters so that in 2021 we learn to speak our voices when we are oppressed and lend a hand for those who are in need.

2021 is a new chapter in our lives, but we shouldn’t erase the fact that who we are as of now is the result of the storm we conquered in 2020. We pick ourselves up once again, ready to rebuild our lives. As long as we remain hopeful, as long as we engrave in our minds that there is always a silver lining in everything, we will survive. Life is a wheel, thus more trials will wait for us in the future years to come, however, before we charge the battlefield once again, we live our lives to the fullest. This year, let us make ourselves happy and courageous. After all, we are protagonists in our own story. Own this year. Own this story. Challenge yourself and be brave.
