Beauty Q&A: How Do I Whiten Yellow Teeth Without Spending Much?

Whiten your teeth without breaking the bank!

Marilyn Monroe once said, "Keep smiling because life is a beautiful thing and there's so much to smile about." While a smile is indeed the best accessory a girl can wear, sometimes yellow-stained teeth can stop one from beaming that beautiful smile. Stained teeth can be a huge confidence downer, too! To help you with this common beauty problem, we had a little chat with Dr. Elaine Hao on how you can fix yellow stained teeth and bring back the confidence when you show the world your beautiful smile without breaking the bank!

Q: How do I whiten yellow teeth without spending much?

Dr. Elaine: To answer that question, let us first define what natural is. Like our skin color, the natural color of teeth varies from one person to another. So when one says "I want a whiter set of teeth," one is basically saying that she wants a lighter shade of her natural teeth color. With that, one can lighten their teeth only up to a certain degree without relying on invasive procedures.

Having said that, there are many causes of yellow stained teeth. Some causes are intrinsic and some are extrinsic. A dead tooth, or root canal treated teeth may cause a tooth to become darker while other causes are due to one's lifestyle like drinking wine, coffee, and eating other stain-causing food. But don't stress because it is indeed possible to whiten yellow stained teeth without breaking the bank and here are some ways to remove, or prevent stain.

  1. Drink water after eating food that causes stains, or after drinking coffee, wine, etc. This will minimize the amount of stain that may come in contact with your teeth.

  2. Of course, regular dental prophylaxis and checkups will also help remove some stubborn stains.

  3. Whitening toothpaste may also help in maintaining the natural tooth color and even in achieving a lighter shade, but this will take a longer time so brush regularly.

  4. Whitening strips are a less invasive and less costly solutions for those who are patient and faithful in applying the strips for 14 continuous days.

  5. Take home tray bleaching may also be as effective as chairside bleaching, but this entails patient compliance, too.

When everything around you suddenly turns dark, the first thing we'd prolly do, as humans, is to find and grab anything that is closest and nearest to us. We'll hold onto them for as long as we can, trying to collect ourselves and gather courage to adjust our eyesights to the pitch black environment that's consuming us minute by minute. And then you'd hear nothing. Your sense of hearing would somehow go off after not seeing anything for quite awhile. You'll let loose. Cry. Panic. You'll be exhausted for fighting your way out. Then just when you're about to stop and give up, you're no longer afraid. There's only this deafening silence and pithole of darkness that's gonna eat you up alive. And surprisingly, you'll make a home out of it.

You'll make a home out of the darkness that when a ray of light suddenly hits you, you'll try to avoid it. You'll try to cover your eyes. You'll try to cover your ears from the voices trying to help you get out of it. You'll try to hide because your mind and body will go against your will to come out and live. Because the darkness that used to scare you, now comforts you in a way you thought has helped you survived life. And you'll try to live. Day by day. In the darkness. Not knowing where to go. Not knowing where to start. Not knowing who is with you. You will try to live until the darkness that once surrounds you is now within you. And everyday, it's gonna be a cycle of subtle torture. But let me tell you a secret. The darkness won't make you whole.

You'll be broken. And in those hair-like cracks, the light will stubbornly fight its way through until it warms you up. Until you realize to check the switch and turn it on. Until you allow other people to help you find your way back in the light. Until you realize you're ready to live in light again. There's a light at the end of this long and dreading tunnel. The only question that matters: will you let them in?
