Many of us struggle with how we perceive our bodies, especially if the things we see around us dictate and influence how we should react to how we look. As a registered dietitian and nutritionist, Jo Sebastian's expertise involve helping people (and herself, of course!) fix their relationship with food. Jo shares, "Your relationship with food is a reflection of your relationship with yourself."
But it wasn't all clear to Jo from the beginning, and she had her fair share of struggles with body image, too. Jo shares that she dealt with disordered eating patterns herself, which is the reason she turned to makeup. "I felt like I needed to cover up or felt like I needed an extra layer of confidence," Jo shared.
Even though it took her a while to realize it, Jo eventually learned that, while putting on makeup can help you feel good about yourself, what she ultimately needed to do was to accept her body as it is. "You don't have to love yourself all the time, not even a hundred percent. But you do have to start in a place of respect and acceptance of your body, and knowing that you're not gonna love yourself a hundred percent, but you know you're still gonna be there for your body even on the bad days."
In this episode of Beauty & Ambition, Jo talks about her makeup routine while sharing words of wisdom about learning to respect—if not love—your body:
