Acne has long been a skin problem commonly experienced by teenagers and even adults. To keep it simple, acne is what happens when oil or dead skin cells become clogged in our pores. It's perfectly normal and nothing to be ashamed of, but following a skincare routine that especially suits your skin type is one way to alleviate it if it gets too pesky for you.

While not all ingredients work the same way for everyone, there are skincare products specifically created to contain key ingredients that will help combat pimple breakouts. It's important to note that just because one product worked for one person doesn't automatically mean it will work for another, but it helps to get recos every now and then to narrow down our search for what suits our skin best.

If you're in the market for skincare products that can help tame your acne problems, we list down five key ingredients to know if you have acne-prone skin, as well as products available in the market that contain them:

Skincare ingredients for acne-prone skin:

Tea tree oil

Thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, tea tree oil helps reduce swelling and inflammation brought about by acne. Use tea tree oil with caution, though, because it might not suit those with sensitive skin. If you're unsure, try using products infused with the ingredient instead of using the pure, more potent, version.

Niacinamide

Another ingredient with anti-inflammatory properties is niacinamide. It also helps decrease sebum production, too much of which can lead your skin to become overly oily and acne-prone.

Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid keeps your skin hydrated by helping your skin retain moisture. When your skin becomes dry, its tendency is to produce more oil to address it, and excessive oil may clog your pores and result in a breakout. It also helps manage redness of skin caused by acne inflammation.

Try:

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, P1,123, Available on Lazada

Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid is known for its exfoliating properties, which help clean out dead skin cells stuck in your pores (aka a common cause of pimples).
