Question: What do time travel, YA dystopia, and vampire romance have in common? Answer: Ellie Goulding. There's something about the English singer-songwriter's edgy, ethereal music that lends itself to everything. You can dance or cry to it; you can play it while getting dressed, studying, or unwinding—she can literally soundtrack your whole life.
And that is why Hollywood loves her. It all started four years ago, when Kick-Ass used the sweetly raspy "Starry Eyed" from her first album, Bright Lights. TV shows picked it up as well as other songs from that album: from Awkward ("Starry Eyed," "This Love") to The Vampire Diaries ("Every Time You Go").
Then Spring Breakers borrowed some pixie dust from "Lights," also from Bright Lights, in 2012. The same year, The Twilight Saga—always good with soundtracks—had her and former boyfriend Skrillex collaborate on "Bittersweet" for Breaking Dawn Part 2. The Host, taking a cue from their sister from the same mother (Stephenie Meyer—sorry, it was a bad joke begging to be told), borrowed "Hanging On" from her second album, Halcyon.
Last year, Ellie slowed down The Waterboys' "How Long Will I Love You?" for her album Halcyon Days and the time travel movie About Time. Then she contributed the Katniss-perfect "Mirror" for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Just last month, Endless Love snatched up "Explosions"—my favorite song off Halcyon after "Anything Could Happen," which is everywhere.
And now for her latest and biggest movie project: Divergent. Aside from lending them three songs off Halcyon Days—"Hanging On" (I See MONSTAS Remix), "My Blood," and "Dead in the Water"—Ellie also wrote "Beating Heart" exclusively for the YA dystopian movie. Director Neil Burger tells Entertainment Weekly, "We knew it'd be perfect for the end of the movie. Her lyrics almost merge with Tris's voice-over and her music lets the movie soar above the tragedy. The sadness is still there but so is the transcendence. It's a fantastic song." Also? Ellie will be playing the musical voice of Tris Prior/Shailene Woodley. NBD.
Now for some dream casting for another movie soundtrack: how perfect would Ellie be for The Fault in Our Stars? I've said it before and I'll say it again: "I'll Hold My Breath" can totally be Gus and Hazel's song. Hit play and let the tears flow.
