Why We Already Love the New Star Wars Heroine

The Rogue One trailer came out last week and we seriously have not stopped replaying it. The first of the Star Wars standalone stories, the film is about the resistance fighters who team up to steal the Death Star blueprints, which were crucial to the destruction of the evil lair in the very first Star Wars movie.

Front and center is Jyn Erso (played by our girl Felicity Jones), a rebel who hasn’t found her cause yet. Arrested for crimes ranging from forgery to aggravated assault, she had us from the moment she oh-so calmly said, “This is a rebellion, isn’t it? I rebel.” Might just be our imagination, but even the rebellion leader looked like she was struggling not to snicker and give Jyn the highest of fives!

Star Wars is notorious for keeping everything super secret so we know practically nothing about Jyn and the rest of the resistance fighters who become the unlikely heroes of the revolution. Already, there are fan theories on how Jyn and Rey from last year's The Force Awakens are related: are they mother and daughter? Are they distantly related? Do they just really look alike? All we know is that we are loving this new wave of female-centric Star Wars movies, giving our generation (and future ones) complex, compelling, and simply badass girls to look up to. (We're already looking forward to all the Jyn and Rey costumes this Halloween!)

Now if Jyn looks familiar to you, it might be because you recognize Felicity Jones from movies such as Like Crazy and The Theory of Everything, for which she got an Oscar nomination. She has played a wide variety of roles—just look at her super packed IMDB page—and no matter what character she's playing, you can always spot that quiet strength in her eyes. We can't wait to see what she brings to this role. Felicity's lips are sealed when it comes to everything Rogue One and all she can say is that she's very excited about it—as are we!

Rogue One hits theaters on December 16. Merry Christmas to us!
