We need someone who will shake us to our core with their very presence, disrupting the everyday mundane and pushing us out of our comfort zone. Someone who will encourage us to try new things, like watching subtitled movies, spending a night at the orchestra, scuba diving in the deep blue sea, spinning around the dance floor on two wheels, or simply keeping the windows wide open on a stormy night for a spectacular view of mother nature raging on outside.
We need someone who will take time to listen to our stories and hear the truths bubbling under the surface. Someone who will remember our throwaway comments and dig into that memory box for special occasions, like birthdays that we will look back on with bumblebee-colored glasses. Someone who will see the genius behind what the rest of the world sees as stupid, questionable, outrageous choices. Someone who will surprise us and make us surprise our own selves. Someone who will look at us and see a million possibilities.
We could all use a Will Traynor, but the man himself would scoff at this—though he’d be flattered of course—and tell us to be the Will Traynor of our own lives. Push your own butt out of the comfort zone. Learn to sit still and listen to your truths. Treat yourself on both special occasions and non-occasions. Stand by your choices. Don't doubt or downplay your own potential. Better yet, be a Will Traynor to others, like the Louisa Clarks who could use that extra push, and find joy in their happiness.
As Will says, "Live boldly. Live well. Just live."
