Among the classic literature highly regarded in the country is Noli Me Tangere, a novel written by the country's national hero Jose Rizal. The piece, together with El Filibusterismo, is a mandatory read in high school, but not all students can easily grasp the message and stories embedded in its pages.
In an effort to connect with the younger generation and help them better understand why the novels are required readings in school, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) hopes to translate the story to the small screen and cast the new generation's favorite stars.
In the online press conference for CCP's Kung Hindi Man, CCP President Arsenio Lizaso was asked about the collaboration project he had in mind with the Department of Education. This project was revealed to be a new screen adaptation of Noli Me Tangere, and Lizaso hopes to put the project to life after being told by one school superintendent that they only finally understood Noli Me Tangere after watching an opera about it. "'Yan ang agimat ng teatro, 'yan ang agimat ng pagtatanghal," Lizaso said during the press conference.Â
The series is already in pre-production and the plan for the adaptation is to have either 12 or 14 episodes. Lizaso also shared that he is planning and "working on getting millennial actors," with a special mention of Kathryn Bernardo, Daniel Padilla, and Liza Soberano. This way, Lizaso believes senior high school students can find the adaptation even more relatable and hopefully easier to digest.
