When Supergirl Met the Flash

We love this dynamic duo!
CBS

While we've got Batman v Superman and Captain America v Iron Man, it's good to know that superheroes can still play nice. On last week's Supergirl, the Flash paid their universe a visit (accidentally), which made for a really cool episode. Some crossovers can be tricky (see: Legends of Tomorrow), but The Flash and Supergirl are the most tonally similar of all the superhero shows now, so overall it was pretty smooth from the second the Flash zoomed into the picture.

So what happens when a superhero meets another superhero? There's no need to feel threatened as finding a kindred spirit can be very cool. Even though they're literally from different worlds, the Flash and Supergirl quickly found out that they have a lot in common, like these things:

  1. Having a famous alter ego. They’re superstars in their respective universes, but they have no idea who each other is. (The official explanation is that their universes don’t share that similarity, but being on different TV networks in the US—even though they’re both DC characters—has a lot to do with it.) Really fun to see both of them be like, “You’re who now?”
  2. Eating 10,000 calories a day to keep their strength up. Probably the coolest part of being a superhero! And because they’re both super fast, they never have to wait long for their food. Win-win!

  3. Thinking of cool names for themselves and their enemies. In Supergirl's universe, the Flash has been dubbed the Blur, Blackout's counterpart is Livewire, etcetera.
  4. Outsmarting and defeating bad guys. One superhero can do the job, but two superheroes joining forces? Those villains have nothing on them.
  5. Realizing you can't please everyone. Even superheroes aren't perfect and are also prone to personality-altering substances. Supergirl has been trying so hard to get people to trust her again, to the point of recklessness, which the Flash can definitely relate to. His advice? "When you're used to fixing things with brute strength—or in my case, amazing speed—it's hard to accept that there are things out of our control. It's humbling, right? Believe me, when you start trying to force the solution, it'll happen on its own."
  6. Breaking into song when they feel like it. Well, in an alternate universe at least! Remember Melissa Benoist (Supergirl) and Grant Gustin's (the Flash) Glee beginnings? We were sort of expecting them to hit the karaoke stage or something, as a wink to their past lives. Oh well, there’s always next time!
