When you think of Zac Efron, you think golden boy, you think washboard abs, you think perfection personified. You think of sweet Troy Bolton still under all that bodybuilder muscle. You don't think of—sorry in advance—a flowing river of vomit, human essence dripping from formaldehyde-treated bodies, and a hilariously nasty inspection of the male anatomy.
These are just a few of the gross moments in Baywatch that have Zac as the common denominator. But wait, you ask, isn't this reboot about beach lifeguards? Well, yes, but as Lt. Mitch Buchannon (played by Dwayne Johnson) will tell you with all the gravitas of The Rock, a lifeguard's duty isn't limited to the beach. A lifeguard of the Bay will go the extra mile to protect its people, thwart criminal activities, and preserve the integrity of the beach. A lifeguard of the Bay does not just look good running slow-mo along the beach in a red-hot bikini or pair of trunks—he or she saves lives in more ways than you can imagine.
Thus the formaldehyde-melted fat and thorough inspection of a poor defenseless corpse. Matt Brody, the disgraced two-time Olympic gold medalist that Zac plays, starts out as a selfish, egotistic jerk, but with some tough love from Mitch, he eventually takes the lieutenant's lifeguard philosophy to heart and goes the extra mile in the pursuit of truth and justice, which somehow always lands him in disgustingly sticky situations. It's part of his atonement, though, after messing up at an Olympic swim meet, a.k.a. partying too much the night before and vomiting his way to the finish line, which earned him the title "Vomit Comet."
These nasty, life-or-death, character-building situations also help Matt and Mitch finally find their groove. With the rest of the team, Summer Quinn (Alexandra Daddario), CJ Parker (Kelly Rohrbach), Stephanie Holden (Ilfenesh Hadera), and Ronnie Greenbaum (Jon Bass), they save the day and make David Hasselhoff, the OG Mitch who makes a cameo along with fellow OG Pamela Anderson, proud.
As loyal fans of the Zefron, we're also very proud of our boy. He's come a long way from his High School Musical days, proving that he isn't just a pretty face—his comedic skills are as on-point as his muscles are turbo-charged. And he doesn't take himself too seriously or shy away from nasty work: The boy has been having so much (gross) fun onscreen, starting with 17 Again and That Awkward Moment to the Neighbors series and Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.
May Baywatch be peak buff Zac—seriously, there has to be a limit as to how many muscles this boy can squeeze in between his 20 or so abs—but may it only be the start of his funny era. Â
