As the fight against the spread of COVID-19 continues in the Philippines, local government units (LGUs) have rolled out different efforts to address problems their respective cities and municipalities are experiencing. Netizens have taken to social media to salute various city mayors for their immediate and effective responses to issues and concerns raised by their communities.
Among the mayors being commended for doing their job as public officials is Valenzuela City’s own Rex Gatchalian. One of the efforts Valenzuela City has taken in light of the enhanced community quarantine in Luzon is to distribute food vouchers to its residents which they can use to redeem food packs. They have also prepared isolation centers and modular tents for COVID-19 monitoring in the city, should they encounter COVID-19 positive residents.

Aside from these, the Valenzuela City mayor also mentioned on Twitter that he plans to create mobile palengke for the city, modeled after Pasig City mayor Vico Sotto’s initiative. A netizen had asked the mayor if Valenzuela could also have their own mobile palengkes, and in response, the mayor said, “Plano nga natin gayahin sila sa Pasig sa pamumuno ni mayor @VicoSotto. Kopyahan na eto!!! Wala naman tayo sa school e... in this case copying is allowed I think.”
Various netizens have agreed with the mayor’s sentiments in his tweet, saying that now is the best time to exercise team work and a healthy exchange of ideas among public officials, especially if it's for the benefit of their people.
Just a week prior, Pasig City also passed its Anti-Panic Buying And Anti-Hoarding Ordinance and credited Valenzuela City for providing the idea and framework.
