Two students from the University of Santo Tomas Senior High SchoolĀ areĀ given a show-causeĀ notice for reportedly being part of the advocacy group Anakbayan.
InquirerĀ reports that the school has issued a show-cause letter to senior high school students for being a member of the organization Anakbayan - UST, a student organizationĀ not recognized by the school's administration. A show-cause letter is issued as part of a disciplinary process where the defendant is asked to present an explanation on why they should not be dismissed from the school. The senior high school students' identities was not revealed.
On January 18, another student was sanctioned and dismissed by the UST-SHS administration from his position in the student councilĀ for creating a Facebook post calling for academic ease. According to aĀ press releaseĀ issuedĀ by the League of Filipino Students - UST, the said student will neither be readmitted to the school for the following school year, nor will he be granted a certificate of good moral character. The said student was identified by Anakbayan - UST as Shoti Ampatuan. They also started an onlineĀ petition calling to overturn the school's decision to dismiss Ampatuan.Ā Ā
On January 25, Kabataan Partylist Rep. Sarah Elago issued a statement on Ampatuan's dismissal, calling for the administration to revisit its student handbooks and supporting the student's call for a more forgiving academic load. "We also urge the UST administration to heed the call of their students and alumni in extending compassion and not repression in these difficult times of a public health, climate and rightsā emergencies," theĀ statement reads.
