Over the last few weeks, our timelines have been filled with headlines regarding the potential shutdown of broadcasting network ABS-CBN amid franchise renewal issues.
On February 10, Solicitor General Jose Calida petitioned against the renewal of the network's franchise, claiming in a statement that the network engaged in "highly abusive practices" which benefitted "a greedy few at the expense of millions of its loyal subscribers." The network's franchise is set to expire on March 30, 2020.
While the resolution to the issue is still up for discussion in Congress, many have spoken up to show support for the network and advocate Filipinos' right to press freedom—including universities, student councils, and student organizations.Â
