The Vampire Diaries vs The Originals

We pit the original bloody good show against its spin-off.

This week, we saw a double feature of The Vampire Diaries and its spin-off, The Originals (raise your hand and comment below if you had a viewing party with your friends, too!).

It was really ingenious of the producers to create the spin-off because this way, they can refocus the storyline on TVD and introduce new big baddies, and at the same time, still give us our weekly dose of Klaus and Elijah. It's too early to tell if The Originals will be as addicting as TVD or even more, especially since the premiere had a whole lot of exposition and replays of the backdoor pilot for the benefit of new viewers, but it has certainly set itself apart already.

Think of The Originals as the kuya of TVD: more gruesome and more mature. We’re talking Klaus’s miracle hybrid baby and Hayley’s mommy issues—we're definitely not in high school anymore.

Speaking of, this season of TVD marks a new beginning for college freshies Elena and Caroline. Elena is trying to make their college experience as normal as possible, even with the surprise roommate who keeps a stock of vervain-laced protein water. By the time we finish Googling whether or not the new roommate is Filipino—she's not; she's American-Japanese—a vampire has already killed her. But wait, there's more! She knew Elena's dad and that might be the reason why she was killed, so expect to find out more about her.

A quick recap of how everyone else is doing: Damon is in love and he's taking care of Jeremy while Elena’s away ("I even cut off the crust from his PB&J myself."), Bonnie is still dead and creeping on everyone, Rebekah and Matt are all cute and flirty, Jeremy was supposed to get expelled for beating up two bullies but Damon intervened, and Stefan is still stuck underwater while Silas is terrorizing the people of Mystic Falls.

When it comes to choosing between the two shows, the odds are stacked in The Vampire Diaries’ favor. But if there’s one thing it has that The Originals needs, it's an irreverent sense of humor. Looking at my notes, I have so many on the TVD column and none from The Originals except for Rebekah's snide remarks—good thing she's joining them soon! My favorite lines aside from Damon's PB&J joke:

  • Human!Katherine: "I'm weak and I’m slow. Do you have any idea what it's like to run in heels? I have blisters!"
  • Caroline on the new roommate: "What if we suddenly get a craving and I want to eat her?"
  • Jeremy to Damon when Damon tells him off for getting in trouble on the first day of school: "Says the guy who killed me!"

The Vampire Diaries airs Tuesdays at 8pm and The Originals Saturdays at 9pm, both on ETC.
