The Queen's Gambit is a new show on Netflix that has been getting a lot of positive attention on social media. It stars Anya Taylor-Joy who plays the chess prodigy Beth Harmon. Since then, she's been taking the spotlight for her impressive performance on the series. Before that, though, she has already played all sorts of roles in films like Split and Emma, and in shows like Peaky Blinders and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, which made fans all the more interested in learning about her.
Anya actually has a very interesting upbringing. Born in Miami in 1996, the 24-year-old actress grew up in Argentina, which is why her first language is *not* English. She only learned it when her family moved to England. In an interview on the Late Night with Seth Meyers, Anya revealed that she learned English through the Harry Potter books. Because of this, she would always be muttering fictional words as a child. "I was either casting spells continuously or using very annoying words," Anya shares.
Her first language is Spanish and she is still fluent at it. Here she is doing a press interview for the movie Split in her first language. Talk about a multilingual queen!
