TIME magazine published its list of 15 Most Influential Fictional Characters of 2014 recently. Have you ever given a thought about who's on your list, Candy Girls? Here are 5 of our favorites from the list, and 5 additions which we think are worthy of mentions, too.
- Hello Kitty. This year, the world discussed whether Hello Kitty was really a cat or a girl after an article published on The Los Angeles Times claimed that she's not a cat. This report had the world going nuts, but Sanrio later clarified that the character is a "personification of a cat," so she is indeed a cat. All was right in the world again.
- Katniss Everdeen. The Girl on Fire from The Hunger Games trilogy has become a symbol of feminism and rebellion. Proof? The three-finger salute from the film also became a rallying symbol for protesters in Thailand and Hong Kong.
- Star-Lord. Guardians of the Galaxy became such a huge hit that it made massive earnings when it hit cinemas, and the original movie soundtrack (Awesome Mix: Volume 1) which was a collection of old-school hits left to Peter Quill's character skyrocketed to the top of the charts.
- Elsa. While Frozen was released in 2013, it was this year that the Queen of Arendelle proved that she was indeed an icon. Her song, "Let It Go," was a staple everywhere this year and the TV series, Once Upon a Time, included her on the show which resulted to an increase in ratings. And also the Queen Elsa figurine has surpassed Barbie as the best selling toy in the USA.
- Amy Dunne. The Gone Girl character may not be suitable for young audiences (be careful when you decide to watch the movie), but her complex character from Gillian Flynn's novel of the same title spiked discussions worldwide about how dark male and female characters are portrayed and also how dark marriages can sometimes be.
- Baymax. The big marshmallow robot has been a favorite this year, too. Designed to be a non-threatening health care provider, Baymax showed us that keeping yourself healthy and even healing shouldn't really look scary.
- Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace Lancaster. The characters of The Fault in Our Stars has given the world a new glimpse of young love—something that takes a risk no matter what.
- Groot. Another Guardians of the Galaxy character makes it to the list. He may only know a few words, but Groot showed us that friendships bring out the best in you, something that you never knew existed before your company came around.
- Peeta Mellark. Katniss Everdeen's tribute partner also deserves a mention this year. Those who haven't read the books yet were a bit shocked with the ending of Mockingjay Part 1, questioning Peeta's love and sanity which the Capitol played with when they captured him. But with guns pointed at his head, Peeta still proved that love reigns supreme and warned District 13 that an attack is about to happen.
- Gwen Stacy. Spider-Man's OTL may have already left his world, but Gwen's commanding attitude (girl knows she's the boss) and her smart choices (education over boy troubles because she's still young) in life will always serve as a source of inspiration for many.
