This year's Metro Manila Film Festival roster is particularly exciting because of all the newbies being given a much-deserved chance. But what about the rest of the year, when there are no festivals, MMFF or otherwise? Where can you find quality films on any given day? There are a few cinemas in town that screen foreign and local indie films, but one that has been making waves recently is Cinema '76, a micro cinema in San Juan named after what is said to be the golden year of Philippine cinema.

Here, you can catch all the interesting movies you see on your feed that you always seem to miss whenever they're showing at a mall or a festival. A few of the cool titles showing this month are Apocalypse Child, a brilliant dramedy about a surfing community in Baler; Sakaling Hindi Makarating, a journey of self-discovery sparked by a mysterious series of postcards; and Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis, the eight-hour Lav Diaz historical fantasy drama. Sometimes the cast and crew also have Q&A discussions before the screening!

Also sweetening the deal are the long couches with throw pillows that take the place of the usual individual seats. (Isn't this the perfect setup for Lav Diaz's eight-hour masterpiece?) If it's a particularly packed screening, though, better head to the bar area at the back, where you can also eat, or the chairs added along the aisles. They don't sell food at the moment, but you can bring your own or call for delivery.

Now doesn't that sound like the makings of a great weekend?
