After being introduced by Chris Pine and Rosario Dawson, a series of clips from last year's VMAs is flashed on the big screen before Taylor Swift is shown in a makeshift living room, barefoot and rocking her blonde hair in waves and lips in red. "Innocent" is a track off her album Speak Now. She sings the following lines: It's alright, just wait and see/your string of lights is still bright to me/who you are is not what you did/you're still an innocent/it's okay, life is a tough ride/you're 32 and still growing up now/who you are is not what you did/you're still an innocent.
After Kanye West's lengthy apology on Twitter (and a declaration that he had written a song for her), Taylor's and Kanye's performances were much-awaited at the VMAs. "Innocent" is rumored to be inspired by last year's incident at the VMAs when Kanye rudely interrupted Taylor's acceptance speech for winning Best Female Video for her song "You Belong With Me."
Kanye closed the awards show with a new song called "Runaway." With lyrics like let's have a toast for the d*****bags/Let's have a toast for the *ssholes/Let's have a toast for the sc**bags/Every one of them that I know/Let's have a toast to the jerk***s/That'll never take work off/Baby, I got a plan/Run away fast as you can, we can't be too sure but we have to ask, is Kanye singing about himself?
