ManyĀ of us (especially Hallyu fans!) dream of visiting South Korea for a vacation, but what if you're given the chance to go to South Korea to study there *for free*?
TheĀ Global Korea Scholarship (GKS), a program ran by the South Korean government, is granting 13 Filipinos a chance to study graduate-level degrees at educational institutions in South Korea for free.
What does the scholarship cover?
Aside from the tuition fee, GKS covers the airfare, a settlement allowance worth 200,000 KRW, a monthly allowance of 1,000,000 KRW for master's and doctoral degrees, a medical insurance worth 20,000 KRW, and a language learning fee worth 800,000 KRW.
Who is eligible to apply?
You can apply for the scolarship if you are:
- under 40 years of age
- a citizen of the Philippines
- a holder of a bachelor's degree (for applicants of master's degrees) or a holder of a master's degree (for applicants of doctoral degrees)
Which South Korean schools can you study in?
There are several educational institutions that have partnered up for the scholarship programs, depending on the field you're interested in pursuing, including Chung Ang University, Dongguk University, Duksung Women's University, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Hanyang University, KAIST, Korea University, Seoul National University, Sungkyunkwan University, and Yonsei University, among others. When is the deadline?
Applications begin in mid February. For announcements regarding the specific date of the deadline, refer to the website or social media pages of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Republic of the Philippines.
Announcement of successful candidates for the first round will be made some time in April, while the second round of successful applicants will made announced in May. The final selection for the graduate degree scholars will be made in mid June. The semester is expected to officially start on September 1.
