Without a doubt, the new generation of showbiz royalties are celebrities in their own right. For instance, Sam Cruz is paving her own path as an artist despite being the daughter of Cesar Montano and Sunshine Cruz. A talented singer and influential fashionista at 17 years old, Sam is determined to prove that she has tons to offer beyond her last name.
Ready to learn more about the budding it-girl? Here are six fast facts you should know about Sam:
1. Sam comes from a showbiz family.
Like we mentioned earlier, Sam is the second daughter of veteran actors Cesar Montano and Sunshine Cruz. Sam is also the younger sibling of actress-singer Angelina Cruz, as well as the half-sister of actor Diego Lozayga. In a previous interview, Sam admitted that she had to deal with her fair share of online bashers and industry pressure while growing up under the limelight. Fortunately, this never dissuaded her from joining the entertainment business because her parents frequently reminded her to stay humble yet confident. Inspired by her parents’ work, Sam frequently watched her parents’ teleseryes as a child and joked about starring in her own gigs someday.
2. Sam rose to fame after joining Squad Plus.
Sam officially entered the industry in March 2021 when she was recruited to join Star Magic’s Squad Plus. Formerly known as Kadenang Ginto’s The Gold Squad, Squad Plus is a group consisting of 13 Gen Z stars such as teen PBB housemate Ashton Salvador and singer KD Estrada. As a member, Sam frequently appears in Squad Plus’ YouTube videos to showcase her bubbly personality and musical skills!
3. Sam is a recording artist.
FYI, Sam loves listening to Ariana Grande, Arctic Monkeys, Nirvana, and other R&B and rock artists. Inspired by their music, she released her first-ever single in August last year under Universal Records. Her pop song "Train of Thought" narrates all the kilig thoughts that go through your mind upon seeing your crush. The music video features Leon Barretto and boasts over 100,000 views on YouTube as of writing! Now close to the one-year anniversary of her debut, Sam plans to write her own songs and collaborate with rappers in the future. In the meantime, she occasionally joins Sunday performances on Asap Natin ‘To. And BTW, Sam also knows how to play the guitar and the ukulele!
4. Sam is also interested in acting.
Although Sam’s first love is music, she’s still open to participating in acting gigs. Last year, she made her acting debut on Unloving U, a romantic comedy mini series by iWantTFC. Sam also once shared that her favorite actresses are her mom and Forevermore actress Liza Soberaño.
5. Sam is currently a high school student.
When Sam first joined the industry, Sunshine reminded her daughter to always prioritize her studies no matter what. That’s why amidst all of her showbiz commitments, Sam is still a studious high school student at De La Salle Santiago Zobel. In fact, she would have been an honor student like her older sister if it weren’t for her grades in Math, LOL. While most students struggle with online learning, Sam actually found the remote setup convenient because she had more control over her schedule.
“Actually, for me, it’s been a lot easier to balance school, work and showbiz since right now it’s all online. So, you could always schedule. For example, if I missed a test, I could make up for it or I could reschedule work. I really just have to learn time management and sorting out which I should put first. But I have to always put school first,” she shared in a past interview.
6. Sam’s BFF is her younger sister.
Although Sam is generally close to all her family members, she considers her younger sister Chesca as her BFF at home. Thanks to their one-year age gap, Sam and Chesca find it easy to bond with each other by eating spicy food and watching scary movies. Of course, they’re not immune to the occasional fight over sharing clothes (if you have a sister, you’d know the struggle is real), but their sisterly bond is simply clear as day. Case in point: Despite having their own rooms, they continue to sleep in one bed to have late-night kwentuhan sessions. One time, they even pierced their own ears at home (they *don’t* recommend it) and ended up getting scolded together by their mom.
